From America First to Students First…

There are so many things going on right now in the world, and our community, it is hard to know where to start. I debated even doing a post tonight, with so many in our community bailing out from this week’s flooding. It certainly seems like the roller coaster never ends.

But the words I heard this week from an inspiring self-proclaimed homegrown “Jersey boy”, Darius Mayfield, candidate for New Jersey’s 12th District congressional seat, reminded me that we can rally back from anything. Darius believes what matters, and the only thing that matters, is that we unite around the idea we are Americans first.

It is with that sentiment in mind that he traveled earlier this year to our southern border to try and better understand the plight of our immigrants, understand it from all aspects – immigrant, border agent, local residents. That sense of community and taking care of those around him is also reflected in his work with the #AmericanCleanup to use his voice and platform to organize community based actions across New Jersey, most recently in Atlantic City.

What I am inspired by with Darius is that he doesn’t sit back and watch others fix problems just because he didn’t create them. He instead uses his platform – and his podcast – to activate others across New Jersey to answer his call for service. Ada and I had a few moments to speak with Darius directly, and he encouraged us to share our voice with all you.

So welcome to the debut of our Students First WC podcast. We hope you enjoy this brief episode where Ada and I discuss how we came to meet, and why we answered the call to run for WCASD School Director.

Students First WC: Putting the students, families, and teachers in the West Chester Area School District first.
